Education's FOMO with AI

Attending CAIS Ontario's AI Panel & Discussion Series it is clear that educators are enamoured with Artificial Intelligence.  Each session's attendance is getting larger and more are looking for guidance. Even the session's lead host, Garth Nichols, humbly admitted he is hosting the event because of it's significance and the fear of missing out is too big.

What it curious is there the huge perceived potential of AI in education, and it is still yet to happen. Teachers and leaders are looking for direction to leverage it's full potential.  The community of CAIS is not alone.  An article posted by Tom Vander Ark, One Year Into the AI Revolution….and Most Schools Are Still Seeking Direction, shares the same energy on how educators are looking for direction and deliberatively exploring AI.  The article references a framework from TeacherAI by creating three stages:

Create Guidance and Policies: Develop guidance and policies for responsible AI use in education, aligning with existing security and privacy measures. Educate students and staff on AI's opportunities and risks, clarify acceptable use, and maintain academic integrity.

Facilitate Organizational Learning: Prioritize professional development to leverage AI's potential. Gather educators' experiences with AI, assess current AI tools, and set selection criteria for future evaluations. This approach ensures equitable AI integration and prevents haphazard adoption.

Promote Improvement and Transformation: Enhance existing policies to accommodate AI safely. Collaborate with organizations for guidance and resources. These stages form a framework for incorporating AI into education, progressing from addressing immediate concerns to transforming the educational system with AI.

This model is a great starting point, and I look forward to find more as things evolve with using AI in the classroom. My hope is AI will finally break down the industrial model barriers that our current education system has been built on. I think others see it too. FOMO.

We can't afford to be left behind, AI has too much potential to transform education.

Otherwise why would the attendance numbers and interest keep growing?
