Sharing a vision tends to be very visceral rather than concrete or pragmatic. Therefore, it is important the audience knows how important it is for their future. I believe our students' aspirations and ideas will shape our tomorrow and they will experience things our generation or previous generations will never know.
What will tomorrow bring? I am not sure.
Where my parents experienced the explosion of media through television and radio, my generation experienced the emergence of the internet. It changed things forever. Things changed again for my children as they experienced the impact of social media and mobile devices. It should not be underestimated, as technology can sustain a revolution, influence presidential campaigns, or turn quiet transit passengers on their phones instantly into a cheering crowd when their team scores the final goal in the Stanley Cup.
My advice then? Try to keep an open mind and not be dismissive or narrow. When you experience a technology for the first time try to understand the possible significance and the opportunities it can bring.
It wasn't too long ago that video conferencing technology was dismissed as a novelty, mainly seen as a tool for saying hi to Grandparents or face timing a friend. This technology is not new, it has been around for a long time but because of the pandemic, it has changed the way we interact and do things. Video conferencing will continue to be an expectation out of convenience. Things like Parent-Teacher conferences, medical pre-consultations, investment consultations, financing will continue to use video conferencing after the pandemic... even the brand name "Zoom" is also now a household name for video conferencing.
I wonder what is next. Will we need wires into our homes for Internet? Will we need to own cars? Will money we use now change? What do you think?
